Patient Aftercare Guide

Select your treatment below for easy-to-follow recovery instructions

Wisdom Tooth Removal

First 24 Hours

  • Bite on gauze for 30-45 mins to stop bleeding
  • Do not rinse, spit or use straws (can cause dry
    socket)
  • Ice pack on cheek, 15mins on/off to reduce swelling
  • Avoid brushing near extraction site for first 24hrs

From Day 2 Onwards

  • Salt water rinse after meals
  • Stick to soft foods
  • Avoid hot, spicy, hard or crunchy foods
  • No smoking/ alcohol

Medication

  • Take prescribed pain medication before
    local anesthetic wears off
  • Take all medication as prescribed

First Few Days

  • Some soreness and discomfort is normal as your teeth adjust — this usually settles within 3-5 days
  • Stick to soft foods (porridge, soup, mashed potatoes, congee) for the first few days
  • Rinse with warm salt water if your gums feel irritated

Daily Care

  • Brush after every meal, especially around brackets and wires where food easily gets trapped
  • Use a fluoride mouthwash to help protect against cavities while wearing braces

Foods to Avoid

  • Hard foods
  • Sticky foods
  • Crunchy foods
  • Chewy foods

If Something Feels Off

  • A loose wire or bracket poking your cheek: cover it with orthodontic wax until your next visit
  • A wire feels too long or is causing pain: please contact us
  • General soreness after adjustments: mild pain relief (like Panadol) is usually enough

Call Us If

  • A bracket or band comes off completely
  • You experience severe, persistent pain
  • A wire is causing significant injury to your cheek or gum that wax doesn’t resolve

Wearing Your Aligners

  • Wear your aligners for 20-22 hours a day for best results — remove only to eat, drink, and brush/floss
  • Switch to your next set of aligners as instructed by your dentist
  • Some pressure or mild discomfort when starting a new aligner is normal — this usually eases within 1-2 days

Eating & Drinking

  • Always remove aligners before eating or drinking anything except plain water
  • Avoid rinsing aligners with hot water, as heat can distort the plastic

Cleaning Your Aligners

  • Rinse aligners every time you remove them
  • Brush gently with a soft toothbrush (no toothpaste as it can scratch the plastic and cause discoloration)
  • Soak in an aligner cleaning solution regularly
  • Never soak in hot water or leave in direct sunlight

Storing Your Aligners

  • Always keep aligners in their case when not worn — avoid wrapping in tissue, as they’re easily thrown away by accident
  • Keep the case away from pets and young children

Call Us If

  • An aligner cracks or breaks
  • You lose an aligner and don’t have a spare
  • You experience persistent pain, not just mild pressure
  • Your aligner no longer fits properly or feels loose

First 24-48 Hours

  • Some soreness or sensitivity around the treated tooth is normal — especially when biting. This usually settles within a few days
  • Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until your permanent filling or crown is placed
  • Mild swelling of the gum near the treated area can occur — this should improve within a day or two

Eating & Drinking

  • Stick to soft foods on the treated side until numbness fully wears off, to avoid accidentally biting your cheek or tongue
  • Avoid very hot or very cold food/drinks for the first day or two if the tooth feels sensitive
  • Avoid hard or sticky foods on the treated tooth until your crown/permanent filling is completed

Daily Care

  • Brush and floss as normal, but be gentle around the treated tooth
  • Take prescribed pain relief (e.g., Panadol) as needed
  • Complete the full course of antibiotics if prescribed, even if symptoms improve early

Follow-Up

  • Make sure to return for your follow-up appointment to have a permanent filling or crown placed
  • Leaving a tooth without its final restoration for too long increases the risk of the tooth cracking or becoming reinfected

Call Us If

  • Pain worsens instead of improving after a few days
  • Significant swelling in your face or gum
  • Your temporary filling falls out before your next appointment
  • Fever or other signs of infection
